Description

Discover a different Florence on a private electric golf cart, far from the crowds and deep into the city’s green hills. We start at Porta Romana, a 14th-century gate, and head outward instead of into the center: this is the Florence of villas, gardens, and the sky that inspired Galileo. We ride the scenic Viale dei Colli, the 19th-century boulevard by Giuseppe Poggi, with tree-lined curves and elegant viewpoints. First stop: the Bobolino Garden, a romantic foretaste of Boboli with stairs, fountains, and terraces perfect for photos and the opening story of a young Galileo Galilei, already testing ideas by observing nature. We continue to Pian dei Giullari, once a stage for medieval jesters and later a quiet district of noble villas. Here stands Villa Il Gioiello (outside view), where Galileo spent his final ten years under house arrest. Despite failing eyesight and restrictions, he dictated the Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences, laying the foundations of modern physics. It is easy to picture the elderly scientist surrounded by pupils, his mind still reaching for the stars. Following Via Suor Maria Celeste, we pass the Convent of San Matteo, home to Galileo’s daughters. Through Sister Maria Celeste’s affectionate letters, we glimpse a tender, private Galileo: not only the rebel scientist, but a father strengthened by his daughter’s care. Her early death in 1634 left him in deep sorrow. A few minutes away, the Arcetri Observatory connects past and future: from Galileo’s handmade telescope pointed at the Moon to today’s research on galaxies and black holes. Arcetri remains a living hub of astronomy. Our last viewpoint is Poggio Imperiale, once a Medici and later grand-ducal residence, today an elegant landmark above the city. From here we close the circle: the Medici supported Galileo as court scientist, yet history tested him; Florence was both his stage and his shelter. We descend back to Porta Romana with a clear impression: this is Florence seen from above—gardens, villas, serene roads, and stories where art, science, and beauty meet. A refined, private experience that reveals the city’s most intimate face in 2 hours, with time for photos, short walks, and unforgettable views.
