Description

Above Florence, where the noise of the city barely reaches you and the panorama opens up like a stage set, there is a place where art, silence and memory meet. The tour will start from the basilica of San Miniato al Monte, the thousand-year-old guardian of stories, spirituality and mysteries, and then lead us to the Cimitero delle Porte Sante. We will focus on the time when the hill became a true fortification, with bastions, walls, and profound transformations in the monastic life around the basilica. A sacred but also strategic place, where the peace of the monastery coexisted with the shadow of wars. The route will continue with the creation of the Cimitero delle Porte Sante, the design of which took shape in 1865, during the years of Florence as the capital, in parallel with the major urban planning projects of Giuseppe Poggi. Here, silence is never empty: every chapel, every statue, every carved door seems to hold a fragment of history. Noble families, the upper middle class, and prominent figures of Florentine cultural life chose this place as a privileged space of remembrance. Amidst Gothic monuments, Renaissance references, exotic influences, Art Nouveau decorations, female figures, and silent angels, the Cimitero delle Porte Sante appears like an open-air museum, where art, memory, and restlessness intertwine. The route will also take us among the graves of great personalities linked to Florence, from Giovanni Spadolini to Pietro Annigoni, from Vasco Pratolini to Luigi Bertelli. Duration of the tour: 90 minutes Meeting point: In front of the Church of San Miniato al Monte, Via delle Porte Sante, 34, 50125 Firenze FI, Italy The tour does not include admission to the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte. All our guided visits are conducted by licensed tour guides Please arrive 10 minutes before the start of the tour. The tours start on time.
