Description
The National Museum at the Bargello has been housed in Palazzo del Bargello since 1865. It features a large collection of Renaissance sculptures including works by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Verrocchio, Michelangelo, and Cellini. The museum’s collections also include bronzes, majolica ceramics, wax models, furniture, and textiles from the Medici family and private donors.
Built in 1255, Palazzo del Bargello originally served as a prison, police headquarters, and site of public executions. It was once the residence of the Captain of Justice (chief of police). Despite several architectural changes in the 14th and 15th centuries, the palace retains its austere character, visible in its courtyard, balcony, and large first-floor hall.
