Parco delle Cascine - Cascine Park

Florence

Fun Gardens and Parks

Open Park. Great place for pic-nics and open air activities(just make sure you clean after yourself), jogging, skating, bike riding...The open air Pavoniere Swimming Pool is located here, open from Spring to September warm days.

In Summertime concerts and music festivals are organized in the Roman Theatre arena thanks to its splendid acoustic.

Brief History:

The large Park of the Cascine were part of the property that Alessandro and Cosimo I de' Medici purchased for use as a banned hunting and cattle breeding. In 1786 Giuseppe Manetti began the refurbishment of the Cascine to make a large public park decorated with furnishings and architecture.

Le Cascine are situated on the right bank of the Arno, a large spatial extent that makes them the largest public park in the city of Florence. Le Cascine were so designed as a hunting reserve and breeding cattle. Within this reserve there were particular types of crops and plantations, in fact, appeared among them rare species of fruit trees. During the Napoleonic period, the Cascine became a real public park. The Cascine Park was acquired by the city of Florence in 1869.

In the 19 th century the gardens of the Cascine were in a romantic style and looked very different than they do now. In addition, during the 19 th century large areas of the park were transformed into sports, as a result of the affirmation of many sports, like swimming, skeet shooting, rifle shooting....
