Description
In the heart of the Oltrarno, almost hidden in the shadow of the Vasari Corridor, Santa Felicita preserves seventeen centuries of Florentine history. The tour will start from the small square in front, dominated by the column that, according to tradition, commemorates the victory of Saint Peter the Martyr over the heretics in the 13th century.
As early as the 4th century A.D., the area was home to a Christian burial ground, around which one of the oldest churches in Florence was built. Rebuilt at the beginning of the year 1000, transformed in the 14th century and renovated several times, Santa Felicita still retains the traces of a very long history.
What forever changed its face was the Vasari Corridor, built to connect the Palazzo Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti. In its passage through the city, the corridor rested against the facade of the church, creating the three-span portico that still characterizes the square today.
We will then enter the most precious rooms of the complex: from the Chapter Room, with the Crucifixion by Niccolò di Pietro Gerini, to the Sacristy, where works by masters such as Taddeo Gaddi and Neri di Bicci are preserved.
One of the most evocative moments will be the passage through an internal corridor, almost 'secret', to the central balcony in the counter-façade: from here the Lorena family could attend the celebrations separated from the other worshippers.
The visit will end in front of the Barbadori Capponi Chapel, a masterpiece of Florentine Mannerism decorated by Pontormo with the collaboration of the young Bronzino: a jewel of color, elegance, and intensity.
Join the tour and discover Santa Felicita with us: a very ancient church, where early Christianity, Medici power, the Vasari Corridor and great painting meet in the heart of the Oltrarno.
