San Miniato al Monte Church
Florence
San Miniato al Monte is located on the beautiful hill overlooking Florence over San Niccolo' District and Piazzale Michelangelo. A brief history and description:
Saint Miniato was the first Christian martyred here in Florence, he probably hailed from East of Greece or maybe was an Armenian King. He settled in Florence with his community and brought Christianity along. He was killed in 250AD during a Christian persecution ordered by the Roman Emperor Decio. The legend narrates that after being escaped a number of punishments, then injured and ultimately decapitated, he picked up his head and went to die on Monte alle Croci Hill where the Church is located. In 1018 Bishop Ildebrando ordered the construction of the Church in the actual location and finished in 1207. The church has a spectacular terrace where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Florence, underneath and around there is its historical cemetery where many Florentine personalities are buried. The interior of the Church is quite unusual with a raised Choir and a large crypt behind and under the central Chapel and altar. The patterned pavement was built in 1207. Three main naves divided by columns with a centered shrine at the bottom of the central nave built by Michelozzo in 1448 and adorned by Luca della Robbia. In the dark ancient crypt, supported by 36 columns, there is an altar that is supposed to be containing Saint Miniato's bones, even though there is proof that those were removed before the building of the Church. Two staircases rise form the lateral nave, both leading to the top part of the church where the main elegant black and white marble altar is located. In the apse there is a13th century mosaic with the image of Christ blessing.
San Miniato Church is known for its beauty and tranquillity, many people come here just to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and pray for the loved ones.
