Santa Croce Church
Florence
The Basilica of Santa Croce - like a great number of other florentine churches - stood for centuries with an unfinished façade of rough stone. In the 19th century , the city decided to cover it with colorful marble and to add the slender bell tower.
If you look up when you enter the church, the first impression you'll probably have is how huge the place is, and how much light filters in from the windows above the nave arches. If you keep walking down the aisles you'll notice tombs of some of the incredibly famous artists, scientists, and writers who were born or lived in Florence.
To get the most out of S. Croce, I would suggest to start the tour along the right nave: immediately you'll see the tomb of Michelangelo Buonarroti and Dante Alighieri's cenotaph.
